Wed 25 Aug 2010  League
AFC Amesbury Town 3
Wilton Town 1st team 0

In awful conditions at Amesbury, ten man Town were beaten 3-0 by AFC Amesbury.

Town started the game poorly and Amesbury took a deserved lead when a free header from eight yards was well saved by Chris Smith and the rebound was put in by another unmarked Amesbury player.

Only two good saves from Smith then kept Town in the game. Things went from bad to worse when Town skipper Dean Bevis was rightly sent off for an off the ball incident just before the half hour.

Once down to ten men Town started to come back into the game and they were unlucky not to go into the break at 1-1 when Gary Hooker saw his effort rebound off the bar.

Just on the stroke of half-time Ollie Smith went down with a nasty ankle injury and Town were forced to bring on their only substitute.

The second half saw the ten men of Town take the game to Amesbury and create some chances. Gary Hooker and Simon Nelmes combined well up front and behind them, Ben Cooper put in a really hard working man of the match performance.

Town were unlucky again when an Amesbury defender headed a Dan Targett free kick against his own bar and it looked as though Town might be able to find an unlikely equaliser.

As Town tired in the conditions and no substitutes were available to give the side fresh legs, Amesbury started to create chances of their own on the break. From one long ball over the top of the Town defence, Amesbury scored a seciond goal and put the game beyond the spirited Wilton team.

A third goal arrived through a spectacular volley and gave the scoreline a slightly unfair look.

Still Town's ten men piled forward and despite creating chances, they couldn't get the goal that their efforts deserved.

Manager Graham Fisher was disappointed with the result, but couldn't fault the spirit shown by his team.

"That's twice in five days I have been very proud of my lads but come away from the two games with nothing. The character and spirit they are showing is great and eventually it will get us some rewards in this league I have no doubt. We just need to make sure that the effort we put in gets us the points we deserve. We will regroup and go again on Saturday."
