Sometimes a team deserves to lose and sometimes a team is unlucky to lose. Never has the phrase, "we woz robbed" been more appropriate than today at Castle Meadow. Town produced one of their best performances of the season and outplayed a very good Moredon Cheney side for long periods.
The first half saw Town have the majority of possession and do everything other than score the goal they deserved.
Moredon Cheney had a great chance to take an undeserved lead when their striker was brought down in the box by Dan Targett but the penalty was struck wide.
The teams went into half-time level but Town were the happier of the two.
The second half followed a similar pattern but Town couldn't find a goal. Moredon Cheney were dangerous on the counter attack and Querino Andrews was forced into making a couple of smart saves.
Town took the lead when Dave Pearce headed home a corner and they went very close to increasing that lead on a number of occasions. Simon Nelmes was brought down in the box but the referee inexplicably waved play on.
Moredon Cheney got an undeserved equaliser when they were awarded the softest of soft penalties much to Town's anger and this time they made no mistake.
A couple of minutes later substitute Ollie Smith, on for the injured Darren Crook, was clean through on goal when he was bundled over by the defender clearly pushing him over from behind. Nobody on either side could believe it when the referee again waved play on.
The game went into extra-time and Town continued to be on top but couldn't find the winner. In the second period a free-kick was awarded to Moredon Cheney for an unknown reason and from that they won a corner. The corner was swung in towards the goal and beat the despairing Andrews to put Cheney ahead.
Town had a couple more chances but in the end they couldn't equalise and went out of the cup. It is fair to say that Town felt very hard done by!
