Town guaranteed promotion with a fine 3-1 win at third placed Pembroke today. At an intimidating venue, Town worked hard throughout the game and deserved to leave with the three points.
Town started the game well and it was no surprise when they took the lead. Lee Johnson worked some space on the left and put in a great cross that skipper Dean Bevis headed home in fine style.
Town continued to create chances but Pembroke were always dangerous on the break. The Wilton back four and keeper Querino Andrews had anything but an easy day.
Town went 2-0 up when Ollie Smith put Chris Guthrie through on goal. It looked as though Guthrie had missed his opportunity but he then produced a sublime finish, chipping over the Pembroke keeper.
Pembroke came straight back and pulled a goal back when some rare sloppy defending was punished. Shortly after, Town had keeper Andrews to thank for a wonderful double save that took them into the break 2-1 up.
The second half saw Pembroke attack the Wilton goal looking for the equaliser but they found keeper Andrews in absolutely top form. He made two saves that even the partizan home support were forced to clap and admire.
Town defended well and looked capable of adding to their lead on the break. Eventually Lee Johnson, who won the skill of the day award with a wonderful dummy and turn, put in a great through ball that a determined Dean Bevis chased and harried the defender into a mistake before rounding the keeper and joyfully tapping in to an empty net.
Town defended the two goal lead well and finished the game with a deserved win and a deserved promotion.
